Friday, November 29th, 2013 - Term 1 Report Cards sent home today!

HELLO READERS of the 
Senior Kindergarten BLOG!!

Day 59... Happy FRIDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperJayden
- During Journal time today, students wrote their November Spelling Test
- Today we read "Little Miss Muffet" in class together and then students completed a sequencing activity. 
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ll/Ff". Today students had Show & Share: L for lion and F for firetruck book.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Today students reviewed the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans. As a fun Art activity, students had to q-tip paint the appropriate colours for leaves on a tree for each season. 
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning)ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 58... Happy THURSDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: Noah
- During Journal time today, students had a Spelling Pre-test. Tomorrow is the actual one.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ll/Ff". Today students practiced "Ff/Ll" sounds via a worksheet.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Today students reviewed once again the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans. Then we had a fun activity using playdoh: in their table groups, students were given a season and then had to create things related to their assigned season. Everyone did a fantastic job on this activity!
- In Math, students used snap cubes to complete an addition worksheet that had questions with sums up to 10.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 - Casual Day!

Day 57... Happy WEDNESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperAvaneesh
- During Journals today, students wrote what they would do on a snow day.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ll/Ff". Today students practiced "Ff" with brainstorming words, printing in their Writing A book and constructing the letter with playdoh.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Today students reviewed once again the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans. Then students had a discussion of what types of clothing are required for each season, and then as a follow-up everyone drew themselves and how they dress during each season. 
- In Math, students made up their own addition problems in their Math Journals.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning)ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013 - Author Talk!

Senior Kindergarten BLOG!!

Day 56... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperAarnav
- During Journal today, students wrote what the meaning of "adding" means. We came to the conclusion that "adding means that numbers are put together and counting it creates a new number". Everyone also wrote their own addition number sentence in their journals.
- This morning we had a visit from the children's book author, Cecile Marie. She was kind enough to read us her book "Dear Doxie Dallas" and answer student questions. What a great time!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ll/Ff". Today students practiced "Ll" some more. 
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Today students reviewed the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans. We talked about the 4 different seasons and what activities we can do during each one. Students then completed a "My Favourite Season" worksheet.
- In Math, students worked in their Abeka workbook today.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning)ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Cecile Marie, a children's book author, will be visiting us on November 26th at 10am to share her stories, answer questions and sell her latest books.  Parents and family members are welcome and encouraged to join us for this fun event.  Cecile Marie's books will be for sale at the end of her talk for $10.  Half of the proceeds of the sale of her books on that day will be donated to SJA for the purchase of books for our own school library.



Day 55... Happy MONDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: MacKenzie
- During Journal today, students wrote about what plans they had over the weekend.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ll/Ff". Today students practiced "Ll" by brainstorming words that starts with the letter, printing in their book as well as constructing the letter with playdoh.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Today students were introduced to the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans. We then briefly discussed the 4 different seasons. As a form of prior knowledge assessment, students completed a worksheet where they had to independently brainstorm words that are specific to each of the four seasons.
- In Math, students continued working on addition problems today.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning), ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 53... Happy THURSDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: Hayden
- During Journal today, students wrote about what their favourite part of the farm unit was.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Oo/Uu". Today students practiced "Uu" and completed a mixed vowels worksheet.
- We are into the 6th week of our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". Students are currently learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). REMINDER: TOMORROW IS FARM FUN DAY!!
- Today, students spent a large chunk of the afternoon working on the rough drafts of their "Student's Comments" for Term 1 report cards. They completed the following prompts:
1. In Term 1, I learned...
2. I played with ___________ during recess.
3. In Term 2, I want to work on...
- In Math, students continued practicing addition.

- We are into the 6th week of our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". Students are currently learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Today students reviewed the process of making pancakes, listened to the story "Pancakes, Pancakes" & then we made pancakes to enjoy in class :)
- In Math, students continued Addition practice. Today we completed a worksheet and students practiced using their fingers to add. 
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 51... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

- During Journal today, students wrote about what their favourite wheat product is (cereal, bread, pancakes, cookies etc).
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Oo/Uu". Today students practiced "Oo" with a worksheet.
- Students also continued with their new workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 6th week of our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". Students are currently learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Today we continued our studies on WHEAT; students watched a video about the process of how PANCAKES are made. They also made a sequencing booklet of the steps of how pancakes are made.
- In Math, students continued working on 1-digit addition problems today, completing a double-sided worksheet. Everyone also practiced extra problems using white board markers on their white-board strips.
- At the end of the day, students watched the dress rehearsal of tonight's play - Hamlet
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.
