Thursday, October 31st, 2013 - HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!





Day 39... Happy WEDNESDAY!   
      
- The SK students, in their awesome costumes, started their morning with a FUN Halloween assembly in the gym with the entire school!! They then went back to class and had calendar time led by our Special HelperJayden
- Everyone had a great day, participating in Halloween activities. Everyone created their own MONSTER, making up its name, what its favourite treat is and who it likes to scare! 
Students brought their monsters home with them today.
- In the afternoon, students had a Halloween party. Thank you for sharing MANY treats & goodies with us everybody :) 
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 39... Happy WEDNESDAY! 

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperAvaneesh
- During Journal time today, students wrote a sentence about what their favourite candy is!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ee/Hh". Today students brainstormed words with "Hh" and constructed the letter with playdoh. 
- In honour of the Fall Festival tonight, students spent the afternoon decorating our pumpkins & investigating them!! Everyone had great fun with these activities:


 Measuring the height of the pumpkin with snap cubes

Day 38... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperAarnav
- During Journal time today, students wrote about what they're most excited about for Halloween.
- Students did extra writing today as they each worked on their POLAR EXPRESSIONS story. This is a Writing Contest that SJA students participate in every year; for the SK level, it is a good starting point & practice for kids to become interested in story-writing, and most of all it was a fun experience!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ee/Hh". Today students practiced "Ee" by completing worksheets.
- We continued with our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For the next 6 weeks students will be learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Today students reviewed livestock on the farm.
- In Math, students continued working on Patterns: today they reviewed yesterday's lesson on ABB & AAB, and also had a lesson on AABB & ABCD.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 37... Happy MONDAY! 

Everyone looked great for Picture Day today!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperMacKenzie
- During Journal time today, students wrote about what they're going to dress up as for Halloween.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Ee/Hh". Today students brainstormed words with "Ee" and completed Writing A printing practice.
- We continued with our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For the next 6 weeks students will be learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Week 3 will be geared toward learning about different MEAT. Today we discussed different livestock & what type of food people might eat that come from cows, chickens or pigs.
- In Math, students continued working on Patterns: today's lesson was on the patterns ABB & AAB. Students used Halloween -themed things to create these 2 types of patterns. They illustrated & wrote what their patterns were in their Math Journals. Here are some student samples:

Day 36... Happy FRIDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: Braydon
- During Journal time today, students reviewed yesterday's lesson and wrote a sentence stating the 5 parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, seeds & flower).
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Cc/Kk". Students had Show & Share today: a picture of a Cake, a Cow, a Doctor's Kit (inside was a Karate belt and a Kool-Aid!). Thank you students!







- We continued with our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For the next 6 weeks students will be learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Today students made a plant craft that they got to bring home.
- The SKs & Mrs. Nelson's Grade 3 class got together today & made a fun Halloween craft. Mrs. Nelson first read a Halloween story to everyone, and then the boys & girls worked very well together on creating Jack-O-Lanterns:

Day 35... Happy THURSDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: Mathias
- During Journal time today, students made their own ABC pattern & wrote a sentence about what the pattern is.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Cc/Kk". Today students brainstormed words with "Kk" and completed a worksheet to practice the sound.
- Students completed review activities to practice all 5 vowels. Great effort everyone!
- We continued with our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For the next 6 weeks students will be learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products). Continuing with our studies on the parts of the plant (fruit/vegetable plants), students completed a task of sorting words under 2 categories: Plant Parts & Plant Needs. We also read very informative books about Leaves, Stems, Roots and Seeds.
- In Math, students continued working on Patterns: today they reviewed ABC patterns.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning), ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 34... Happy WEDNESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special Helper: Saanchi
- During Journal time today, students discussed or wrote/illustrated a reflection on the workshop from yesterday; they shared what their favourite part was!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Cc/Kk". Today students brainstormed words with "Kk" and constructed the letter with playdoh. 
- We continued with our 2nd Unit of Inquiry entitled "Down on the Farm"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For the next 6 weeks students will be learning about "From Farm to Table" concepts (what the sources of our food are, such as milk/meat/wheat products).  Today students learned about the different parts of a plant: roots/stem/leaves/seeds/flower. We discussed types of fruits & vegetables that grow in trees or from the ground. They then cut & labeled a picture of a plant.
- Today students had a lesson about October's IB Learner Profile: Inquirer. We read a book about a penguin (Pipkin) who loves asking questions! Students then completed a sheet writing/illustrating the sentence: Pipkin is an inquirer when... (he asks a lot of questions. He is curious).
- In Math, students continued working on Patterns: today they reviewed & made their own AB patterns & ABC patterns.
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.

Day 33... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our 
Special HelperElina
- During Journal time today, students excitedly wrote predictions about what they think the Senses workshop will have & what they are looking forward to doing!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Cc/Kk". Today students practiced printing the letter "Cc" in their Writing A book.
- Students practiced all the 5 vowels this morning with a worksheet (short & long)
- The enthusiastic students participated in the Senses Workshop today, help by the organization Scientists in School! They had a wonderful time exploring all 5 of their senses at different stations run by the Scientist, 2 students from Ms. Chin's class and myself. Please be sure to ask your child about this workshop; it was the perfect way to wrap up this unit!
- Students attended GYM (Mr. Browning), ART (Ms. Pattenick) FRENCH (Mme. Stella) classes at their assigned times.
