Thursday, May 30th, 2013 - FARM FUN DAY!

Students started FARM FUN Thursday by practicing our Science Fair presentation. We also had a special visitor, Mr. Rojas, who joined us for the day!! 
Students attended French and Art Nights practice this morning (and afternoon as well).
For the remainder of the morning, students were the audience to an Exhibition project headed by one of the groups (Alberto & Tito) in Ms. Chin's class. 
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to present their food items for Farm Fun Day. We had a plethora of healthy and yummy foods! Students eagerly shared where the food came from as well. Great work everyone!!



HAPPY FARM DAY!!



At the end of the day, students practiced more for Science Fair by presenting in front of Ms. Genco's class and also being an audience to Ms. Genco's project as well. Students then had Gym with Ms. Lopez at the end of the day.

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 - CASUAL DAY

Students started Wednesday by completing an activity practicing the concept of "Duration" (How long does it take?). Students looked at pictures and determined if particular tasks (i.e. brushing teeth, eating a meal, reading a book, etc) would take a short time or long time.
Students attended French, Music and Art Nights practice for the remainder of this morning.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Afterwards, students spent time reviewing our Science Fair project and completed worksheets and activities on today's UOI lesson, which was on "Edible parts of Plants". 
At the end of the day, students had silent reading time and Gym with Mr. Browning before packing for home.

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Bonjour,


Students started Tuesday with a visit from the Police! Officer Catherine came to SJA this morning and educated the class on what policemen do and their role in the community. This was a late add-in to our previous Community Helpers unit (it was scheduled for today due to lack of availability earlier in the year!).
Students also attended French and Art Nights practice this morning (and afternoon).
For the remainder of the morning, we reviewed concepts from our Farm unit after a short hiatus (since we were working on the Science Fair all last week). Today students watched videos on how WHEAT is harvested and collected for the eventual production of flour and then ultimately bread.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students practiced the concept of ordering events using common knowledge and logic.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students wrote and illustrated a journal reflection on today's visit from the police. Before packing for home, students decorated their own police officer badge!

Monday, May 27th, 2013

Bonjour,

Students started Monday by sharing what they did on the weekend
Students attended French and Art Nights practice this morning (and afternoon).
For the remainder of the morning, we reviewed concepts from our Farm unit after a short hiatus (since we were working on the Science Fair all last week). Students then had a lesson on "From Wheat to Bread". We watched a "How it's Made" clip of how bread is made. Students then did a follow-up activity on different types of bread. 
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Afterwards, students spent time on our Science Fair project and we wrote our conclusion and whether or not everyone's hypotheses were accurate.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students practiced more for Science Fair

Students started Friday with morning bellwork. Today we did some review pages in the Letters & Sounds book. 
Students attended French and Art Nights practice this morning (and afternoon).
For the remainder of the morning, boys & girls wrote the GOOD COPY of their Term 3 "Student's Comments" for their report card.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Afterwards, students were THINKERS & COMMUNICATORS when they made observations and conclusions for our Science Fair project on "What drink makes teeth rot the most?"
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Ms. Lopez.
At the end of the day, students had Art. Today they finger-painted Spring-themed pictures of either a butterfly or flower

Students started Thursday with morning bell work; tying in with our Farm Unit, students completed another writing and illustrating activity, answering the question "What is your favourite vegetable?". 
Students attended French and had a great Arts Night practice with Ms. Genco's class this morning!
For the remainder of the morning, students worked on the rough copy of their TERM 3 "Student's Comments". They also illustrated a picture of themselves in Term 3 (also will be attached to the Report Card).
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on MEASUREMENT. We reviewed the different non-standard units of measurement for size, length, height and capacity before moving to our next type of measurement: WEIGHT. Today students discussed the terms "heavy" and "light". They then practiced with worksheets.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Ms. Lopez.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. Students practiced Blends (p.21).

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

Bonjour,

Students started Wednesday with morning bell work; tying in with our Farm Unit, students completed a writing and illustrating activity answering the question "What is your favourite dairy food?". 
Students attended French and Music this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students had silent reading time and we also checked up on our Science Fair experiment, discussing any changes/observations. Students also gathered in the auditorium with the entire school to take our panoramic picture.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on MEASUREMENT. Today students were introduced to the term "Capacity" (empty vs. full). We discussed the meaning of the concept and students completed practice worksheets.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Ms. Lopez.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. Students practiced Blends by writing words and sentences for "pa/pe/pi/po/pu" (p.21).

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 - Welcome Back!

Bonjour & Welcome Back,

Students started Tuesday with morning bellwork (students eagerly wrote about their long weekend in their journals).
Students attended French this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students were INQUIRERS, THINKERS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE during our SCIENCE FAIR experiment!!Please be sure to ask your child about the Science Fair, which will be on the morning of Friday, May 31st! The more students talk about it, the easier it will be for them to retain what they've learned in class! Today in class, we reviewed our experiment topic and then students wrote in their Science Journals what materials our experiment requires and the procedure of our experiment.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Afterwards, we continued with our Science Fair experiment!
In Math, students continued their unit on MEASUREMENT. Today students worked on "Indirect Comparison" of lines; they were given lines of different lengths which had to be measured using both paper clips & small cubes. Students also compared how measuring with these two different materials changes the answers of the length of the lines.
At the end of the day, students practiced their Arts Night song with Ms. Genco's class and then attended Gym class with Mr. Browning.

Thursday, May 16th, 2013 - Have a wonderful Victoria Day long weekend!

Students started Thursday with Journal Writing.
Students attended French this morning. They also practiced singing and practicing dance moves for the song that they will perform on Arts Night (Wednesday, June 5th @ 7pm).
For the remainder of the morning, students first had Reading Buddies with Ms. Elliott's class. Afterwards, students listened to a book played on YouTube entitled "Bear Wants More". Students looked at the pictures and listened to the story 3 times before they were given a "Sequencing" assignment where they were given pictures from the story that were in the wrong order. Students had to put the pictures in order from beginning to end. 
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. Next, students continued another activity related to "Bear Wants More"; this time they had a writing task where they wrote about their favourite part of the book. Next week we will complete this task by creating a picture of the favourite parts by using pieces of construction paper.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we focused on "ar"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.20).

Students started Wednesday with Prediction-writing. Everyone was eager to share their "ending" to the story to the rest of the class!
Students attended French and Music this morning. They also practiced singing the song that they will perform for Arts Night (Wednesday, June 5th).

Students started Tuesday with circle time
Students attended French and practice for their Arts Night performance this morning. 
For the remainder of the morning, students were THINKERS & COMMUNICATORS when they worked hard on a challenging story re-tell task! Students listened (3 times) to a story (one longer than the norm) and were asked to INDEPENDENTLY fill out a "Re-tell Map" - Triangle/Rectangle/Circle. Students were focused and put forth much effort!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students took a break from their Measurement unit & completed their MATH ASSESSMENT for TERM 3. This was the same assessment that was given during TERM 2
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "ar"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.20).

Students started Monday with journal writing.
Students attended French and Music this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students were INQUIRERS, THINKERS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE during our discussion on our SCIENCE FAIR TOPIC! Please be sure to ask your child about the Science Fair, which will be on the morning of Friday, May 31st! Today in class, we came up with a topic and talked about what materials we will need for the experiment. More information to come this week!!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on MEASUREMENT. Today students worked on predicting how many cubes long certain objects in the classroom are (eg - eraser, pencil, book, lunchbag, etc) and then measuring with cubes to see if their predictions were accurate. Students found this task to be a challenge, so we will practice more tomorrow!
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "ar"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.20).
