Bonjour,

Students started Monday with journal writing. Students are improving at writing at a quicker pace these days; keep it up SKs!
Students attended French and Music this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, students continued becoming Knowledgeable learners & Inquirers during their last unit in the IB theme "Sharing the Planet" on Farming. Today we read a book about farm machines and then students discussed the process of how milk gets from the cow all the way to the grocery store. Afterwards, students completed a cut & paste activity on "The Story of Milk".
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on PATTERNING. Today students reviewed different types of patterns by working on "Farm animal patterns". Students who were able to successfully identify and continue AB, AAB, ABC and AABB were working at a Level 3, while students who successfully identified BEYOND those patterns (eg - ABCD, AABC) were working at a Level 4
THE PATTERNS TEST IS ON THURSDAY, MAY 2nd.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "ue"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.18).

Bonjour,

Students started Friday with a house game! Students then had journal writing, where they wrote about which of the 5 senses they would give up if they had to choose one. 
Students attended French this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, for our IB theme "Sharing the Planet" on Farming, students had a choice to make either a pig, cow or sheep.  




After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. 
In Art, students created a cool NAME BUG. Using their names, they coloured and illustrated around their names, making a creative piece of artwork. Students also had Reading Buddies with Ms. Elliott's class!
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.

At the end of the day, students had their Spelling Test for April
Show & Share for "oi" was today. Students shared: s"oi"l, c"oi"ns and f"oi"l.

Students started Thursday with MORE story retell practice. Students will continue practicing their listening and memory skills to retell a story that is read to them. They then have to transfer the main events of the story onto paper. I am noticing more effort put towards this task. Keep up the hard work everyone! 
Students attended French and Drama this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, students continued becoming Knowledgeable learners on their last unit in the IB theme "Sharing the Planet" on Farming. Today we read a book about jobs on a farm and then students completed a follow-up activity to be tested on their understanding. 
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on PATTERNING. Today students learned how to make AABB patterns by making their own patterns of this kind.


** There will be a Math Test on Patterns next Thursday, May 2nd. **
Review sheets will go home tomorrow. 

Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "oi"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.17).

For the remainder of the morning, students continued gaining background information on their last unit in the IB theme "Sharing the Planet" on Farming. Today we read a book about the different types of food that farms produce and eventually send off to stores for us to purchase (plants & animals). Students then made their own "Barnyard Animals" booklet.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their unit on PATTERNING. Today students learned how to make AAB patterns by making their own patterns of this kind.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "oi"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.17)

Bonjour,

Students started Monday with journal writing. Students wrote and then shared what they did during the weekend.
Students attended French and Music this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, students were introduced to their last unit in the IB theme "Sharing the Planet". For this unit, students started off by sorting different pictures that are related to farming and the production of what comes from a farm. Students explored this concept in different ways by discussing where milk/cheese comes from and what animals provide for people. Students also shared an item from their lunch bag and talked about the origin of the food item.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their new unit on PATTERNING. Today students inquired into the AB pattern and practiced this specific type. 
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "oi"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.17)

Friday, April 19th, 2013 - EARTH DAY SPIRIT DAY

Bonjour,

Students spent the entire morning participating in EARTH DAY GAMES & HOUSE GAMES while the teachers had an IB Seminar. They also watched  Dr. Seuss's The Lorax in honour of Earth Day.


For the rest of the afternoon, students ate lunch, had silent reading time and completed some Earth Day worksheets. Each group for the HAPPY & SAD collages from earlier this week also presented their projects.
Students also listened to the book "The Lorax" and compared it to the movie.

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 - PAJAMA DAY!

Bonjour,

Looking super comfy in their pajamas today, students started Thursday with story retell practice. This week students will practice their listening and memory skills to retell a story that is read to them. They then have to transfer the main events of the story onto paper.
This morning we also had a class discussion about Earth Day and the significance of why it is important. Students then completed a writing assignment where they wrote how people can help the Earth.   
Students attended French and Drama this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, during our last week of this current unit of inquiry on "Feelings, students finished their 2-day Summative Project. Students worked in groups to make collages - today students completed their SAD collage.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their new unit on PATTERNING. Today students made a tall ice cream cone with different scoops of ice cream that they created a pattern from.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "ou"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.16)

Students started Wednesday with story retell practice. This week students will practice their listening and memory skills to retell a story that is read to them. They then have to transfer the main events of the story onto paper.  
Students attended French and Music this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, during our last week of this current unit of inquiry on "Feelings, students started their 2-day Summative Project that will take place in class today and tomorrow. Students worked in groups to make collages - one for the feeling HAPPY and one for SAD. Today students completed their HAPPY collage and tomorrow they will do the other one. 
Students did a fantastic job working in teams!! 
They displayed the IB Learner Profiles COMMUNICATOR, CARING & OPEN-MINDED!!












After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued their new unit on PATTERNING. Today students practiced finding and continuing the patterns given to them.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.

For the remainder of the morning, during our last week of this current unit of inquiry on "Feelings, students will review key ideas that have been emphasized. Students seemed to have gained a strong understanding of how feelings are important in all aspects of life. Today students completed another review sheet where they had to look at the emotion of the character in the picture and identify the most appropriate feeling for it.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students started their new unit on PATTERNING. Students inquired and explored patterning by discussing different patterns that surround us. They were then given snap cubes to make their own original patterns. Once they were finished with the patterns, students were required to draw them onto their worksheet.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "ou"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.16)

Students attended French and Music this morning, practicing more for the French Cafe (May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, during our last week of this current unit of inquiry on "Feelings, students will review key ideas that have been emphasized. Students seemed to have gained a strong understanding of how feelings are important in all aspects of life. Students started Friday with daily journal writing (What are your favourite clothes?) and morning circle time (special helper / calendar / weather, etc).  
Students attended French this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students focused on their unit of inquiry (How we express ourselves -"Feelings"). Today students had the simple task of writing about their feelings: "Today I feel ... because ...".
Afterwards, students started their Art activity that continued on into the afternoon. 
After first lunch/recess, storytime was led by a student. Next, students continued with their Art activity; today students made a RAINY DAY craft using different shapes! 



Students also had Reading Buddies with Ms. Elliott's class today!












Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "qu"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.15).

Bonjour,

Students started Thursday with daily journal writing - today students wrote about what SUPERHERO they would be and what powers they would have. They also illustrated very cool pictures of themselves as these superheros. Students were then excited to be able to share their journal entries at the carpet.
Students attended French and Drama this morning (French Cafe prep - Friday, May 10th).
For the remainder of the morning, students continued their unit of inquiry (How we express ourselves -"Feelings"). Students listened to a story entitled "Chrysanthemum". Students then wrote and illustrated the different feelings that the main character Chrysanthemum exhibited throughout the story. Students exhibited the learner profile "Reflective" throughout this assignment, for they had to think back about the book and transfer ideas onto paper. 
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a student. In Math, students continued reviewing Geometry for the test coming up. Today they made 2D & 3D shapes (square, triangle, rectangle, cube, rectangular prism) with marshmallows & toothpicks!











IMPORTANT NOTE: THE MATH TEST HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY, APRIL 15th. That is when Ms. Genco returns to school. Please continue studying key ideas at home until then :)
