Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 - CASUAL DAY

PEARCE

Bonjour,

Today we welcomed a new student to our SK class: Pearce!

Students started casual Wednesday with daily bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students attended French and Music this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students engaged in a "Feelings" activity where they listened attentively to different scenarios and wrote and discussed how they would feel if they were in these situations. Students did a super job on this task by expressing how they felt as well as providing logical reasons for their emotions!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime with a student leading the read-aloud. In Math, students continued their inquiry on 2D shapes. They used the materials from yesterday and constructed shapes with ribbon, straws and pipe cleaners. Along with that, everyone recorded their information by writing the name of the shape, what material works best to build the shape and why that material is the best choice
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "sh"-sound words. Students completed a worksheet to practice distinguishing "sh" and "ch" words. Students also practiced Blends (p.13). They practiced c & k blends.
Show & Share for "sh" will be tomorrow (March 28th).

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

Bonjour,

Students started Tuesday with daily bell work (students listened to a short story & drew a picture of the story) and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students attended French this morning. Drama will resume on Thursday.
For the remainder of the morning, students finished some Math we had left over from yesterday (work on ordinal numbers). Following that task, everyone had time to independently silent read while each student sat with me to select items for their IB Portfolio binder. From their UOI on Community Helpers (that just ended recently), students were instructed to choose their "Best Work", "What I worked my hardest on" and "What I want to improve on" for their binders.
Students also completed another page in their EMOTIONS booklet (for our Feelings unit); today's feeling was SHY. We discussed reasons why people might be shy, and students then wrote times in their lives when they are shy.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime led by a classmate. In Math, students explored shapes by using different materials (ribbon, pipe cleaners and straws) to build them. After building circles/triangles/squares/rectangles with the different materials, we discussed what worked well and what didn't work well. We will continue this activity tomorrow, when students record their findings.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.

At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "sh"-sound words. Students brainstormed a list of words that have "sh" in it (beginning, middle or end). Students also practiced Blends (p.13). They practiced c & k blends.
Show & Share for "sh" will be on Thursday, March 28th.

Monday, March 25th, 2013 - Welcome Back!!

Welcome back everyone,

I hope everyone had an awesome March Break!

Students started Monday with daily journal writing (writing about what they did during the break) and morning circle time (special helper / calendar / weather, etc).
Students attended French and Music this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students delved into what will be their unit of inquiry for the next several weeks (How we express ourselves -"Feelings"). Students reviewed different emotions a person can feel at different times; everyone then engaged in an activity where each person was assigned a particular feeling and illustrated what a face would look when it feels that emotion. Afterwards, students sat at the carpet and guessed the feeling of each other's "faces".
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime. In Math, students reviewed geometry concepts: names of 2D shapes, properties of 2D shapes and ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc).
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. This week we will be focusing on "sh"-sound words. Students also practiced Blends (p.13). They wrote c & k blends in their notebooks.
Show & Share for "sh" will be on Thursday, March 28th.

Bonjour,

Students started Thursday with daily journal writing and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students attended French and Drama this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students learned about
March's Learner Profile: THINKER. We read a book about a young student who has trouble thinking of what to draw, but she eventually solves her problems and discovers her own originality by creating great pictures. Students then shared and wrote down what makes them a THINKER similar to the character from the story.
After first lunch/recess, we had storytime with a student leading the read aloud. Students then attentively watched/listened to Alyssa's Community Helpers summative presentation

Can anyone guess what she wants to be when she grows up?

Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had time to complete their Student's Comments for Term 2 Report Cards, which will be sent home the Thursday (March 28th) after we return from March Break
Students had to answer 3 questions for the report card comments:
1. What is your favourite subject at school?
2. What is something you learned in Term 2?
3. What is something you want to work towards during Term 3 (subject/behaviour)?

HOMEWORK etc...

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

Bonjour,

Students started Tuesday with daily journal writing and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students attended French and Drama this morning.
For the remainder of the morning, students practiced again another important element that comes hand-in-hand with reading: "re-telling stories". Students listened to a book called "A Green, Green Garden" by Mercer Mayor and after discussing main points from the story, they wrote the big ideas from the beginning, middle and end.
After first lunch/recess, we had storytime with a student leading the read aloud. Students then had a mini-Math evaluation where they had to not only answer questions about Time & Addition/Subtraction, but then they had to EXPLAIN their thinking and HOW they reached the answers they got. This is a concept we will continue practicing for the remainder of the school year as many had a hard time verbalizing how they achieved these answers.
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had their lesson in Phonics. Students practiced p. 12 in their Blends book (sa/se/si/so/su) & had a quiz on a mix of different blends from p. 3-11.

Students attended French and Music this morning.

After first lunch/recess, we had storytime with a student leading the read aloud. Students then completed Math questions in their book while some got called on for DRAs (Reading assessments).
Before second lunch/recess, students had Gym with Mr. Browning.
At the end of the day, students had time to work on another important Language task - Sequencing. They were given different pictures and instructed to sort them into the appropriate order.
