Day 72... Happy CASUAL WEDNESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Braydon.
- This morning students completed a journal sheet where they wrote and illustrated 3 questions they would ask Santa.
- Throughout the day, students gathered in the gym for Christmas concert dress rehearsals.
- We are into the 4th week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter/Christmas.
- Students worked on a "Christmas Addition" Math sheet.

- Students attended GYM/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Day 71... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Noah.
- Today our class spent the morning working on different "Christmas-themed" activities. Students coloured and cut out a Santa, completed a sequencing sheet (Dressing Santa) and also illustrated and labeled their own stockings.
- Students continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 4th week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter/Christmas. Today students spent the afternoon making another "cool" craft that they will bring home later this week ;)

- Students attended GYM/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Day 70... Happy MONDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Cherin.
- During Journal time today, students wrote "If Santa was stuck in my chimney, I would..."
- After writing, students created the craft portion of this topic. This mini-assignment was sent home today!
- Students continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 4th week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter/Christmas. Today students made a special ornament that they will bring home later this week :)
- Students practiced their Frosty the Snowman performance in preparation for the concert!

- Students attended GYM/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Day 69... Happy FRIDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Avaneesh.
- During Journal time today, students had the big Spelling Test of all the words since September. Super job everyone!!
- Today everyone wrote up a WISH LIST for Christmas :)
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Jj/ie". Today students had Show & Share!
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 3rd week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter. We ended the week by watching Frosty the Snowman and drinking yummy hot chocolate!
- In Math, students practiced with a subtraction worksheet.

- Students attended GYM/ART/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Day 68... Happy THURSDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: MacKenzie.
- During Journal time today, students had a Practice Spelling Test. Everyone seems well-prepared for tomorrow's real test!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Jj/ie". Today we practiced "ie" with a worksheet. I encourage students to study long vowel words regularly!
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 3rd week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter. Today students completed yet another snowman sequencing activity, which they can't get enough of!
- This afternoon, we had a visit from the Dairy Farmers. This workshop is a delayed follow-up from our previous unit "From Farm to Table". Students had a fantastic review of the dairy process, from cow to store. We even made butter from scratch!

- Students attended GYM/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013 - Snowman Day!

Day 67... Happy WEDNESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Mathias.
- During Journal time today, students worked on a STORY RETELL of the book "Just a Snowman". What a fantastic job everyone did on this task; keep it up everyone!
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Jj/ie". Today we brainstormed a list of words with "ie" and practiced with a worksheet.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter.
- In honour of this week's season, students focused on snowman-themed activities. We sorted "snowman-shaped" subtraction problems, completed a drawing/writing "how to build a snowman" activity and finally, we made our own snowmen using edible foods (marshmallows, pretzel sticks, sprinkles and candies of different kinds!).

Day 66... Happy TUESDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Zackery.
- During Journal time today, students first listened to the book about what snowmen do at night and then wrote the journal response, "If I was a snowman at night, I would..."
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Jj/ie". Today we reviewed words with "Jj" and completed a worksheet. Students also completed sequencing worksheets, unscrambling words to make proper sentences.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds".
- We are into the 3rd week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter. Today we discussed items related to this season and sounded out how to spell them (such as earmuffs, scarves, hot chocolate, hat, mitten, etc). Students also learned about thermometers and what temperatures are related to certain seasons.
- Today in Math, students had a quick review on Addition and were introduced to Subtraction. Everyone completed a worksheet and answered subtraction problems, drawing pictures to help them.
- Students attended GYM/FRENCH class at their assigned times.

Day 65... Happy MONDAY!

- The SK students started their morning with calendar time led by our

Special Helper: Marcus.
- During Journal time today, students wrote about what they did over the weekend.
- Students had their JOLLY PHONICS today: this week's focus will be on the letters "Jj/ie". Today we brainstormed a list of words that begin with "Jj" and practiced printing it. Students also completed short vowel practice worksheets.
- Students also continued with their workbook today - "Letters & Sounds". This book will reinforce the concepts of vowels and letter sounds, increasing with difficulty as the year continues. Boys & girls completed more pages of this book today.
- We are into the 1st week of our 3rd Unit of Inquiry about "The 4 Seasons"! This unit is categorized under the IB theme "How the World Works". Students started by reviewing the Central Idea of this unit: Seasonal changes affect humans as well as singing the Seasons song. This week's focus will be on Winter. We discussed and brainstormed a list of activities people can do during this season and then students wrote & illustrated what their favourite activity in the Wintertime is. The finished results are currently displayed on our door.

IB ATTITUDES

We at SJA expect our students to develop and apply the following attitudes:

ACTION IS IMPORTANT!!

Action is a significant aspect of the IB learning process. Please become a follower of the SK class blog to post any action your child has completed at home. When his/her name appears on the blog, your child will receive house points. This is to help further their knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Students are to use what they have learned and apply it to the “real world.” For example, if we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Action varies and ranges from something small to something very large; as long as students are understanding the concepts, action is important no matter the size. Thank you for your cooperation :)
