Friday, September 28th, 2012 - TERRY FOX FUN

Bonjour,

The SKs started this sunny & beautiful Fall Friday with Convocation in the Gym with the entire school, and after returning to class, they participated in morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls had their weekly Reading Buddies time with Ms. Elliott's students! Afterwards, students wrote their highly-anticipated SPELLING TEST for SEPTEMBER. Tests will be sent home on Monday to be signed & returned.
Students then had Arts & Crafts time and made Thanksgiving turkeys in preparation for this holiday that is coming up very soon!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then worked more on their turkeys and then prepared for the Terry Fox Run! What a great success; everyone is commended for participating in the run this afternoon at the park!
Upon our return to the school after the run, the SKs had Show & Share for "Nn". Students shared the following objects: "N"ecklace, "N"apkin, "N"otebook, and "N"ew York Yankees cap! Good work!

Boys & girls continue to work on listening to the teacher, their peers and instructions as we want to try to utilize our time as much as possible. As well, we will continue to practice raising our hands before speaking.

As IB students, we want to be display qualities such as respectempathy and cooperation, just to name a few!

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started this brisk Fall Thursday by completing bell work and participating in morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls went to Drama class and heard the story of the "Three Little Pigs"; they also illustrated wonderful drawing of the piggies. When they came back to class, students continued talking about being Caring (one of the IB learner profiles). Today we read a fantastic story about Friendship called "The Rainbow Fish"; for our follow-up activity we created a "Rainbow Fish" of our own; on a "fish scale" made from construction paper, each student wrote a description word of what they think a quality of a good friend is. We then pasted each scale onto a big "fish".
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then had a lesson in Math on Data Management (SORTING); this unit will focus on sorting and grouping different things in various ways. Students also worked on Math pages in their workbooks.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas at their usual time. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 - CASUAL DAY

Bonjour,

The SKs started this "casual" Fall Wednesday by completing bell work and participating in morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls went to Music. When they came back to class, we had a meaningful lesson on the IB learner profile "Caring". Students made a "Caring Circle" and took turns sitting in the middle while classmates said kind words about the student. It was great to see boys & girls give compliments to one another!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). Continuing with our learning on "Caring", the SKs then each chose a person from school (teacher/student/etc) and made a Caring card for him/her, which read "I care about you" on it. When everyone was done, we walked around the school and handed out the cards to everyone; it was wonderful to see the pleasantly-surprised smiles on the recipients' faces!
Before second lunch/recess, students had a grand ol' time in Physical Education with Mr. RojasATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs worked on pages in their Math book, and also continued their Phonics lesson on "Nn", completing a worksheet for reinforcement.
Show & Share will be on Friday, Sept. 28th.

Boys & girls continue to work on listening to the teacher, their peers and instructions as we want to try to utilize our time as much as possible. As well, we will continue to practice raising our hands before speaking.

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started this sunny Fall Tuesday by completing bell work and participating in morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls went to Drama class, which ended with a fun game of "Duck, Duck, Goose!". When they came back to class, we changed it up a bit and students worked on our Unit of Inquiry on Feelings. We read a story on different feelings & then focused on the emotion of being "Happy" today. As a class we made a list of "What makes you happy?"; as a follow-up, students started the first page of their "Emotions Journal", colouring & writing about the feeling of being HAPPY
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then finished their journal page & attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson ("Nn"). This week we will concentrate only on this letter. Show & Share will be on Friday, Sept. 28th.

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started this chilly Fall Monday by completing bell work and participating in morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls went to Music class and had a blast singing & dancing! When they came back to class, students worked on our Unit of Inquiry (Sensational Senses!). Today we started by singing our song again and then went over the concept of diagrams & labeling different parts of one; students practiced by labeling diagrams of the parts of the body associated with their senses (i.e. the eye, mouth, etc). Great work on this challenging task!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then wrote their first Math test of the year! This can be quite a tough task; everyone should be proud of their effort. Marks will be sent home to be signed this week.
Before second lunch/recess, students attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson (on "Nn"). This week we will concentrate only on this letter. Show & Share will be on Friday, Sept. 28th.

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started Friday with a fun house game run by Mr. Browning in the Gym. We then headed to class for bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella. Afterwards, boys & girls worked on our Unit of Inquiry (Sensational Senses!). Today we started by singing our song again, which is getting better & better each time! Students then reviewed all 5 senses, following which they were assigned a journal response where they had to write what "The first thing I see/hear/touch/smell/taste when I wake up is...". EXCELLENT WORK on everyone's part for this task; the focus was impressive; students displayed their Thinker learner profile.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then had Show & Share for the letters "Ii" and "Pp"; thank you to the students who presented today. Before heading to see Mr. R, students had Reading Buddies with Ms. Elliott's class!
Before second lunch/recess, students attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs enthusiastically participated in an Art activity where they created Braille! This tied right in with our Unit of Inquiry; students discussed how it would feel to be blind as well as how visually-impaired individuals read (which is by using Braille). Every student did a superb job on this art activity.
Since we had some time left before packing up, these hardworking boys & girls started their Math Review Sheets in class!! The package has been sent home for the weekend to help prepare for the test this coming Monday, Sept. 24th. NOTE: Please try to let your child work on these review worksheets as independently as possible (reading instructions and some guidance is allowed).

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started Thursday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella and attended Drama class immediately after. Afterwards, boys & girls worked on our Unit of Inquiry (Sensational Senses!). Today we had a discussion about the sense "Touch"; we discussed different textures of things & then students completed a cut & paste worksheet where they had to select the pictures of objects that are deemed "dangerous to touch" (such as a boiling kettle or an outlet).
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs were then introduced to another Unit of Inquiry, the one that will be incorporated into learning throughout the entire school year: Feelings! We read an informative and fun book on feelings and then students had to complete a worksheet writing & illustrating Happy/Sad/Angry/Surprised.
Afterwards, students worked on Math, practicing "counting backwards" as well as "fill in the missing numbers", via worksheets.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson (on "Pp"). They practiced with a worksheet where they had to select the pictures that begin with the "Pp" sound.

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started chilly Wednesday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella and attended Music class immediately after. For the rest of the morning, boys & girls reviewed our Unit of Inquiry (Sensational Senses!). We began with the 5 Senses Song, which is starting to sound pretty good! Students also worked on a review sheet where they had to write what part of the body is used for each sense; this was a challenging task for many as they had to write the words independently and they seemed to be hesitant to make mistakes. We will continue to work on being "Risk-Takers" throughout the year, as per the IB Learner Profile. Following the Senses review, students had a lesson on how to make a LIST, and as an example we made a shopping list for Walmart together (Note: boys and girls want to buy items such as: toys, air freshener, and pie, just to name a few!)
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). The SKs then wrote their first OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment) of the year, where they had to make a list of favourite foods that they would want to purchase for a class party. Considering this is the first assessment, they should be commended for their great effort!
Afterwards, students worked on Math, practicing counting via worksheets & workbook.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas. ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson (on "Pp"). They practiced printing in their workbooks.
Show & Share for these "Ii" & "Pp" will be on Friday, Sept. 21st.

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started Tuesday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc).
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella and attended Drama class immediately after, where they worked on puppets. For the rest of the morning, boys & girls focused on TASTE as the "Sense of the day" for our Unit of Inquiry. Students engaged in a super-fun activity today to help them realize the significance & usefulness of the sense of Taste; to get a "sense" (no pun intended) of what types of tastes there are (salty/bitter/sweet/sour), for each type students tried a different food to distinguish differences among these tastes (salty - plain chips; sweet - sugar cubes; sour - lemon; bitter - cocoa powder). Students seemed to enjoy this activity immensely! They also had to complete a "Matching pictures to taste" worksheet.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper). We then had Math, where students practiced "Fill in the Missing Number" via a game we all played together.
As part of the IB framework, the learner profiles are extremely important to understand and apply. This afternoon students continued their learning of the learner profile "Caring" and completed their worksheet from yesterday.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson (on "Ii"). This week we will concentrate on "Ii" & "Pp". Show & Share for these letters will be on Friday, Sept. 21st.

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Bonjour,

I hope everyone had a fun & eventful weekend! The SKs started Monday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). Students shared what they did over the weekend, which is always interesting to learn about!
Students then practiced French with Madame Stella and attended Music class immediately after. For the rest of the morning, boys & girls focused on SMELL as the "Sense of the day", for our Unit of Inquiry. Today we brainstormed an interesting list of things that give off a smell of some kind, whether good or bad. Students also wrote a journal response on "What is your favourite smell & why?" (writing + illustration).
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime (book chosen by the Special Helper).
As part of the IB framework, the learner profiles are extremely important to understand and apply. This afternoon students were introduced the learner profile of "Caring"; we watched a short animation film (Oma's Quilt) associated with this learner profile, and then each student had to complete a worksheet on how they exhibit the "Caring" quality in their daily lives, as compared to the character's "Caring" trait in the film.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas.
ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, the SKs had their Phonics lesson (on "Ii"). This week we will concentrate on "Ii" & "Pp". Show & Share for these letters will be on Friday, Sept. 21st.
Before packing up for home, students had Math, where they worked diligently on pages in their workbook. There will be a MATH TEST next Monday (Sept. 24th, 2012).

HOMEWORK etc...
1. Read for a minimum of 5 minutes everyday (Record in log); new book sent home today!
2. Words of the Week (new list has been sent home!)

SPIRIT DAY -> Friday, September 14th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started Friday off with a fun house game in the Gym with the entire school; Congratulations to Theta!! Upon returning to their classroom, students quickly finished bell work and then had morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. For the remainder of the morning, students used different senses to explore the movie "Horton Hears a Who" (this is an extension from yesterday, when we had a read aloud with the book); for the first half of the movie, students could only WATCH since the volume of the movie was turned off. For most of the second half of the movie, students could only LISTEN since the screen was not shown. For the last 20 minutes or so of the movie, both sound & picture were on for the students to compare with. It was evident that students enjoyed the movie the most when BOTH sound & picture were shown, but the Journal Response Question of the day was:
Which did you enjoy more, just WATCHING (with no sound), or just LISTENING (with no picture)?
Boys & girls had an exciting first Reading Buddies experience with Ms. Elliott's Grade 7/8s. It is great to see the little ones and older ones work so well together.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, students had Show & Share for letters "Aa" and "Tt". We also shared feelings about the week, as well as potential plans for the weekend.

HOMEWORK etc...

1. Snuggle Up & Read : Minimum of 5 minutes (continue recording in log)
2. Practice Spelling Words
3. Jolly Jingles (for some)
4. Journal Response Question -> (1-2 sentences + a picture)

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started Thursday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. Students attended Drama class immediately after. For the remainder of the morning, students investigated the sense of "Hearing" in their Unit of Inquiry; they listened intently to the story "Horton Hears a Who" & for their follow-up activity, each student used a q-tip to practice the artistic concept of "dabbing" paint onto an ear template.
In the afternoon, students worked on Phonics, practicing the letter "Tt" via a worksheet. Tomorrow is Show & Share for letters "Aa" & "Tt". In today's Math lesson, students learned about Counting down, followed by a short worksheet on "Counting Down from 5 to 1". Students also worked on a page in their workbooks.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 - Happy Birthday Sarah !!

Bonjour,

The SKs started Tuesday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. Students attended Drama class immediately after, and it appeared that they had tons of fun there! Before first lunch/recess, students worked on their Unit of Inquiry on Senses: review of the sense "Sight", re-read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", followed by an activity where students had to colour every part of an eye using a template, according to their own eyes!
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime as per usual. Students then had a Math lesson focusing on the number 2 (and relating it to just how many body parts come in 2s); followed by a page in their Math workbooks. Students also worked on Phonics, continuing practice with "Aa" via a worksheet.
(Note: Jolly Jingles "Ss"/"Aa"/"Tt" should be worked on at home; students are to independently circle all the letters on the appropriate page - eg) "Ss" page - all the "Ss"s should be circled. This will aid in letter recognition.)
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, students had a lesson on "Capitalization". They were introduced the concept of how every sentence MUST begin with a "Big"/Capital letter. The SKs completed a page of practice for this. We ended the day with some silent reading, then packed up for home!

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Bonjour,

The SKs started off this sunny Monday with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. After a morning snack, students worked on their Unit of Inquiry on Sensational Senses. Today's focus was on the sense "Sight" and how lucky we are to have such a ability. Following a discussion and a game of "I Spy", we read aloud the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?". As a follow-up activity, students had to sort the pages of the book and put them in the proper sequence to make their own "Brown Bear" booklet. Once the booklet was in order, they had to colour each animal appropriately.
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime as per usual. For the remainder of the time, students had a discussion about voting and tally charts in Math (we made a tally of who had brown, blue, or green eyes in our class). Students then worked on pages in their A Beka workbooks.
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!
At the end of the day, students had their Phonics lesson; this week's letters are "Aa" & "Tt". Please begin review of Words of the Week with your child! Show & Share will be on Friday for these letters. (Refer to right side of blog for students who are Showing & Sharing this week)

The SKs started Friday off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. After a morning snack, students had a productive session of "Catch-Up Work", where they had an opportunity to complete and/or practice any concepts or worksheets from the week. We also had Show & Share for the letter "Ss". Thank you to our SK friends for sharing their lovely "Ss" things :)
After first lunch/recess, students had storytime as per usual. For the remainder of the time before second lunch/recess, students engaged in an Art activity where they had their hands traced and then using paint and their index fingers, students had to design/colour their hands. A "First Day of School" poem was then pasted onto the paper of the finished product. Students will bring home these cute crafts on Monday. Reminder: for those who have not brought in smocks, please do so in order to prevent stains on school uniforms for future art projects. Thank you!

The SKs started the day off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. Immediately following, students attended their first Drama class! For our Unit of Inquiry on "Sensational Senses", we went on a Nature Walk to investigate the school's surroundings by listening, looking, smelling and touching select items. Of course, tasting was taken out of this particular activity! After the walk, students filled used a graphic organizer worksheet to write/draw some things they discovered with their senses when they were outside.
After first lunch/recess, we had storytime. For Math today, students practiced counting to 50 and also discussed how many family members they each have. Everyone had a chance to share, and afterwards they completed a worksheet where an illustration of all family members (including themselves) was required. In Phonics, students continued practicing "Ss". This Friday will be our first Show & Share; every week different students will bring in items that begin with the letter that is being taught in class that week. This week is the letter "Ss" !
Students also attended Physical Education with Mr. Rojas (which is everyday from 1:20-1:50pm). ATTENTION: GYM CLOTHES ARE TO BE WORN ONLY ON MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS!

Thank you!
On this sunny Wednesday, the SKs started the day off with bell work and morning circle time (special helper/calendar/weather, etc). They then practiced French with Madame Stella. After a morning snack, students delved right into our Unit of Inquiry on "Sensational Senses". They learned a cool song about our body's five senses. This will help them understand the importance of using the FIVE Senses to help us perform different tasks. After singing, the SKs spent a good chunk of the rest of the day working on a "My Five Senses" booklet where they had to write & illustrate what they like to see, hear, smell, touch and taste.
For Math today, students worked on a page in their workbooks. In Phonics, the letter "Ss" has been introduced. This Friday will be our first Show & Share; every week different students will bring in items that begin with the letter that is being taught in class that week. This week is the letter "Ss" !
